With the eating-out market in the UK valued at over £80 billion, it’s easy to see why these tech companies are vying for a slice of the pie. Past successes like Just EAT have proven that if startups can bring value to consumers and merchants alike they will be rewarded accordingly. Whilst most of the investment has been focused on companies the other side of the Atlantic, there is significant food tech talent here in London and Europe. There’s infinite possibility for technological innovation in the hospitality industry, but mobile ordering and payments is one area that’s set to take off in 2015:
Mobile Payments & Ordering
Mobile ordering, despite it’s massive potential, has struggled to really hit the mainstream yet. A number of competing startups are all vying for the same market, primarily food service businesses – a group who are unfortunately notoriously hard to reach.
However, with larger retailers starting to implement their own solutions, most notably Starbucks launching a mobile order & pay app soon to be rolled out across the US, smaller operations are quickly beginning to realise the value this tech can bring.
Whilst the end user experience is mostly the same between these companies, i.e. a faster, convenient way to order and pay with your phone. The real value is in the customer data merchants can now capture, analyse and employ to increase loyalty and repeat business.
